Vitellogenin (Vg), a yolk protein precursor has been implicated in mediating a long life-span and high fecundity of queen honey bees. In this study, Ren and Hughes tested whether Vg-like proteins can regulate the lifespan of insects in general. Expression of honey bee Vg or Drosophila CG31150 ( a Vg-like protein) however, did not show any positive effects on Drosophila lifespan or fecundity. Instead, they found that the GeneSwitch system commonly used in these types of studies did have an effect on Drosophila lifespan. This result underscores the importance of controls on conditional gene expression systems.

Cytoscape App Article Collection
Guest editor: Alexander Pico
Cytoscape apps are software applications written in Java that customize and extend the functionality of Cytoscape for network data integration, analysis and visualization. There is a steady stream of Cytoscape apps being produced by developers around the world and deposited at apps.cytoscape.org. This article collection highlights apps with clear use cases for network researchers as well as relevant implementation tips for other app developers. Every app in this collection is freely available and open source.
