Contributor Biography

Vitek Tracz studied mathematics in Warsaw and Jerusalem before coming to London to study cinema. After making films for a number of years, Vitek started a medical book publisher called Gower Medical Publishing. He then started publishing some research journals and established a series of review journals, Current Opinions, covering topics in medicine and biology. With the arrival of the internet, Vitek developed one of the first web based communities for biomedical researchers called BioMed Net. Advances in technology prompted Vitek to become one of the initiators of open access publishing and launched the first open access publisher, BioMed Central, in 1999. During that time Vitek was also involved in developing the first telephone navigation system, Telmap. In addition, Vitek also launched web-based video service where major figures from the 20th century tell their life stories - Web of Stories. Currently, Vitek is primarily engaged in developing a set of services through F1000 that support researchers. These include F1000Prime, F1000Research, F1000Workspace, and a series of open research publishing platforms on behalf of funders and institutions.
