Contributor Biography
Rosalind Smyth is Director of the UCL Institute of Child Health and Honorary Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician and non-executive director of Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. She graduated in medicine from Clare College, Cambridge and Westminster Medical School and trained in paediatrics in London, Cambridge and Liverpool. Until September 2012, she was Professor of Paediatric Medicine in at the University of Liverpool and was Director of the NIHR Medicines for Children Research Network, which supported all clinical research with children in England, from 2005-2012. Rosalind’s research interests include respiratory virus infections and cystic fibrosis. Martin Elliott is UCL Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Co-Medical Director at The Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). Professor Elliott studied at Newcastle University both as an undergraduate and a postgraduate, and also in the Universities of Southampton and London. He was appointed a consultant paediatric cardiothoracic surgeon at GOSH in 1985 and has been Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UCL since 2004. His research interests have included the patho-physiology of cardiopulmonary bypass (developing modified ultrafiltration), clinical outcomes analysis (establishing the European Congenital Heart Defects database, now the EACTS database), the nomenclature of congenital heart defects (of which society he was the founding president), effective teamwork (with F1 teams and BA) and the management of congenital tracheal stenosis.
