Rebecca Lawrence and Michael Markie

 

Contributor Biography

Rebecca Lawrence is Managing Director of F1000 Research Ltd.She was responsible for the launch of F1000Research in January 2013, and has subsequently led the initiative behind the recent launch of Wellcome Open Research, a new publishing platform owned by Wellcome but run by F1000. She is a member of the High-Level Advisory Group for the EU’s Open Science Policy Platform, and has co-Chaired a number of working groups focussing on data and peer review, for organisations including the Research Data Alliance (RDA), CASRAI and ORCID. Rebecca is an Advisory Group member for JISC’s Journal Research Data Policy Registry, and for the data policy and standards initiative, Biosharing. She has worked in STM publishing for over 15 years for several publishers including Elsevier Life Sciences where she built and ran the Drug Discovery Group. She originally trained and qualified as a pharmacist, and holds a PhD in Cardiovascular Pharmacology. Michael Markie is the Publishing Director for F1000 Research Ltd. He is an open science, open data and open research advocate leading F1000’s effort to change the way science is communicated. He played a pivotal role in devising the open research publishing model and launching F1000Research in 2013, and now oversees the development of the publishing platform services F1000 provide for leading funders and institutions such Wellcome and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Michael previously helped to develop and subsequently manage F1000Posters, an open-access repository of posters and slides in biology and medicine. Michael is an active member of the open science community and gives many talks/seminars/workshops on the subject at international conferences and research institutions. Michael previously studied Chemical Biology at the University of Leeds, where he worked on synthesising a range of potential anti-tumour compounds.
