Phil Ward is the Deputy Director of Research Services at the University of Kent, UK. A gamekeeper turned poacher, he previously worked on the other side of the funding fence at the Arts and Humanities Research Council. He's still not sure, but on balance thinks it's better to get than to give. He manages the funding team at Kent, which pro-actively supports academics in identifying and applying for research funding, and in developing the University's research policy and culture more broadly, including running the ECR Network and the award-winning Grants Factory programme.
