The movement to bring data into the scholarly record as first class research products (validated, preserved, cited, and credited) is picking up pace. As data publication venues proliferate, significant debate continues over formats, processes, and terminology. Approaches to data publication can differ in a variety of ways, including the type of documentation, the location of the documentation relative to the data, and how the data is validated. In this review Kratz and Strasser provide a comprehensive overview of data publication initiatives underway, highlighting points of consensus and issues still in contention.
