What regulates our bodies?

Willis Samson, Professor of Pharmacological and Physiological Science at St Louis University, is one of the Heads of Faculty of Diabetes & Endocrinology at F1000Prime. Gina Yosten is a postdoctoral fellow also at St Louis University, and an F1000Prime member in the Endocrinology Section of the Physiology Faculty.

In this video, Professor Samson tells us how his interests lie in the control of blood pressure and endocrine function by the hypothalamus, and of Dr Yosten’s own studies, which focus on G-protein coupled receptors and their role in cardiovascular physiology.

By using advanced pharmacologic and bioinformatic techniques, their lab has been able to identify novel hormones and the associated receptors, including the identification last year of the neuronostatin receptor as GPR107 and this year of a new reproductive hormone named phoenixin.
