Israel Science Foundation leads the way in open science with the launch of dedicated open access publishing gateway

Press Release

Today, the Israel Science Foundation (ISF) has announced that it has launched the ISF Gateway, an exciting new open access publishing avenue for ISF-funded beneficiaries.

Not only will the publishing gateway make it simple for authors affiliated with the ISF to publish any research or data they wish to share rapidly, openly and transparently, but it will also aggregate and showcase a broad range of content and outputs in a dedicated ISF hub, hosted on the F1000Research publishing platform.

All outputs will be published open access so free for anyone to read, and will use the F1000Research publishing model that combines the benefits of pre-printing (providing rapid publication with no editorial bias) with mechanisms to assure quality and transparency such as invited and open peer review, archiving and indexing.

The ISF gateway is a significant step towards implementing the ISF’s open access policy, which is currently being established. It is hoped that the gateway will provide a dedicated publication venue to support all the principles of open research to maximize the impact of their work.

The gateway launches with publications from two renowned labs in receipt of ISF funding. The first is a method article from Noam Ziv’s Lab based at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology, and the second is a research article from Benny Geiger’s Lab based at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Prof Benny Geiger, former Chair of the ISF’s Academic Board, said of the ISF Gateway: The work on the ISF Gateway, over the last three years or so, was motivated by a genuine desire to promote a novel Open Access publication platform, that is fast, highly professional, includes an interactive post-publication peer review and is affordable. Since April 2020 to date, I have submitted two papers to the ISF Gateway. The first was accepted within ~ 3 weeks, 3 detailed expert reviews were obtained about 4 weeks later, and the revised final version appeared in mid-June. The performance of the editorial office, the speed and quality of the peer review and the transparency of the entire process were truly amazing, way beyond my expectations over three years ago. On August 19 the second paper was submitted. We sincerely expect that the peer-reviewed and broadly accessible ISF gateway will provide an excellent exposure for ISF-funded science to wide audiences, world-wide.”

Rebecca Lawrence, Managing Director of F1000 Research Ltd said: “The leadership and innovation shown by the Israel Science Foundation in its desire to embrace open research publishing practices with its own dedicated gateway is a significant step forward for open science in Israel. By choosing to adopt our highly innovative open research publishing model, the ISF will be able to give their authors greater choice, reach and flexibility.”

The ISF gateway enables its grantees to publish all their research, increasing the sharing of the grants’ outcomes, funded by the foundation. All ISF researchers that has received a grant over the past ~10 years can publish any research outputs they wish to share. The scope of the gateway covers all the ISF’s funded disciplines; the exact sciences, life sciences and medicine, social sciences and the humanities and welcomes positive, negative or null studies, replication studies and refutation studies equally.

To celebrate the launch, the ISF will be covering the publication fees for the first thirty papers published in the gateway. Early career researchers, who do not hold an ISF grant themselves, are also eligible to publish with the endorsement of an ISF grant holder.
