Research FOMO – Do you have it?

If you feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of research papers published in your field, then you are not alone; data from PubMed suggests that over 3000 articles are published every single day. It’s therefore not surprising that you may be suffering from FOMO – fear of missing out on key research.

Isn’t more published research a good thing?

Yes, undoubtedly it is! The more research is published the more it encourages conversation within the community, which in turn leads to further advancements in our scientific understanding. However, owing to the sheer amount of research activity that is conducted all of the time, it makes it very easy to miss out on the key information relevant to you in your main fields of interest, let alone those fields adjacent to your own.

Finding the time to filter, study and absorb the literature can be difficult. You can spend hours of your day sifting through countless articles from multiple journals and publishing outlets without making much of a dent in the content produced daily.

If this situation sounds all too familiar, then you might be suffering from research FOMO. But don’t fret! F1000Prime can help you.

How does the F1000 Faculty work?

The F1000Prime Faculty comprises four groups:

Heads of Faculty are leading scientists and clinicians of particular note, who oversee coverage of fields that are relevant to their Faculty and nominate Section Heads to assist them.

Section Heads are acknowledged experts in their field who oversee coverage of fields that are relevant to their Section. They also nominate Faculty Members.

Faculty Members are leading figures appointed to represent their field by evaluating the relevant literature and recommending notable articles. Each shares their opinion, by way of short commentaries, on how the findings advance our current understanding and the future impact they may have on the direction of that field of research.

Associate Faculty Members are junior colleagues that Faculty Members can appoint to assist them in evaluating the literature. They also monitor the tables of contents of all the major general and specialist journals to ensure that they don’t miss any literature in their area.

How are papers ranked and what do the recommendations mean?

According to an online survey by Nielsen, 92% of us will trust a referral from a friend. So, why not think of the F1000Prime Faculty as your personal team of 8,000 experts from around the world.

When a Faculty Member finds a piece of research they think is interesting and noteworthy, they recommend the article for F1000Prime. In addition to the recommendation itself, classification tags such as ‘Good for Teaching’, ‘Interesting Hypothesis’ and ‘Technical Advance’ to name but a few are added, to provide a quick and handy way to filter the content you are looking for.
