Students and postdocs joined us on the @F1000Tips Twitter account on February 19th for a live tweet chat using the #F1000Talks hashtag to discuss the issues facing PhD candidates in today’s scientific climate. Our special guests were Dr Hashem A. Dbouk @hashemdbouk from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and graduate student Jeremy Fagan @jekey from Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
The discussion was fast paced, passionate and, at times, candid. The overall consensus was that getting a PhD is hard; however, it seems that most who embark upon that path are prepared for this and have a love for science that will get them through their journey.
A few other talking points were raised, such as the job market for PhDs, Government funding and public support for science. At the end of the chat, we concluded that free pizza is the answer to sustaining academic science across America and, probably, the world!
If you couldn’t make it to our tweet chat, you can catch up on the main talking points here.
