Next week is International Open Access Week, and this year we have planned several events for you. Most of them are online events, so you can attend from anywhere in the world, and we hope to (virtually) meet many of you during our Google Hangout, web demo, and Reddit Science AMA.
Google Hangout: The state of Open Access in the Global South
One of the goals of open access is to make research available to a wide audience, but many of the discussions about its success focus on North America and Europe. What is the current state of open access in the Global South? Join our Google Hangout to hear from Abel Packer (SciELO / FAPESP Program, Director) and Rosario Rogel (Directora Editorial de Redalyc) on the challenges being faced by Open Access initiatives in Mexico, Brazil and other countries that form part of their respective consortiums.
The interview will be livestreamed here, or you can start following us on YouTube to watch it there (live or archived later).
Starts Monday October 20, at 11AM EST, 12PM São Paolo, 10AM Mexico City, 4PM London
From Open Access to Open Science – F1000Research demo
With its transparent post-publication peer review model and open data requirement, F1000Research is bringing open access to the next level. Find out more in this web demo of the site.
Register to attend (free) and to receive an invitation to the webex.
Starts Tuesday October 21, at 11AM EST, 4PM UK
The journal is dead – Reddit Science AMA
F1000Research Managing Director Rebecca Lawrence will answer questions from Redditors about new publishing models. Are journals disappearing? Discuss, and ask Rebecca anything!
Keep an eye on Reddit Science for this one. You will be able to start asking questions a few hours before the AMA starts. For a longer description, see the OA week event page.
Rebecca will start answering questions on Tuesday, October 21, at 1PM EST, 6PM UK
Talk at QMUL: From Open Access to Open Peer Review
For researchers at Queen Mary University of London: Find out from F1000Research Outreach Director Eva Amsen how peer review is changing, and what journals are doing to open up peer review.
Thursday October 23, 2:30 – 3:30pm in the 4th Floor Seminar Room in the John Vane Science Centre
Canceled due to technical isses. UPDATE: PART 2 – Google Hangout: The state of Open Access in the Global South
Because Rosario Rogel of Redalyc was unable to join the Google Hangout on Monday due to technical issues, we have scheduled in a second event to talk to her. Direct link to new Google Hangout.
Thursday October 23, 5:30 PM (UK), 12:30 PM EST, 11:30 AM Mexico City.
ALL WEEK:
Finally, to celebrate Open Access Week, we are waiving the article processing charge on all articles submitted to F1000Research between October 20 and October 26. If you haven’t sent in an article manuscript yet, this would be a good time to do so!
