Welcome new Heads of Faculty: Urology

Here at F1000Prime we are grateful for the work of our Faculty; without them we wouldn’t exist. They provide recommendations for articles along with explanations for their choices, identifying key papers week in, week out.

Our Heads of Faculty work hard to ensure the scope of their Faculties and Sections truly reflect their fields and we are pleased to announce some new appointments.

We are excited to announce that Christopher Evans (UC Davis) and Laurence Klotz (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Canada) have joined Arnulf Stenzl and Peter Scardino as heads of the Urology Faculty.

evansChristopher Evans is professor and chairman of the Department of Urology at University of California, Davis School of Medicine and a member of the UC Davis Cancer Center.

Dr Evans attended Dartmouth Medical School and served on active duty in the United States Army, including two years as Chief of Experimental Surgery at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. He completed surgery and urology training at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by fellowship training in urologic oncology at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center. He joined UC Davis in 1997 as the Director of Urology Research. In 2006, Dr Evans became Department Chairman, and in 2010 he became Chairman of the UC Davis Medical Group Practice Management Board.

Dr Evans’ research laboratory focuses on prostate cancer; specifically, mechanisms signaling the androgen receptor to activate prostate cancer growth and progression following castration. His laboratory has developed models to study this and has identified novel mechanisms that activate the androgen receptor. He works closely with medical oncologists and radiation oncologists to provide multimodal approaches to cancer therapy.

klotz

Laurence Klotz is Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto and the chairman of the World Urologic Oncology Federation and the Canadian Urology Research Consortium.

Dr. Klotz’s laboratory has been studying the effect of selected micronutrients—particularly capsaicin, metformin and several isoflavanoids—in the prevention of prostate cancer. His team analyzes the effect of these antioxidants on gene expression and molecules, which regulate cell growth. They are also interested in the relationship between the androgen receptor, a critical component of prostate cancer biology, and the response to micronutrients. The major thrust of Dr. Klotz’s research is to analyze the mechanisms by which these cancers are prevented.

Dr. Klotz also has a long interest in the conservative management of prostate cancer, and is the principal investigator on a number of clinical trials evaluating the role of various interventions and imaging studies in men on active surveillance.

We are pleased both have agreed to become co-heads of the Urology Faculty, and welcome them on board!
