We are excited to announce that two of Europe’s bioinformatics titans have launched their own Open Science publishing channels on the F1000Research platform.

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), an internationally renowned research center that is home to several key ‘big data’ repositories and Europe PMC, launched their Channel today. Its current aim is to collate the work published on F1000Research involving their researchers, but will soon also be used as a platform to publish official EMBL-EBI documents such as technical reports and white papers.

In their Editorial piece Jo McEntyre (Head of Literature Services) and Ewan Birney (Director of EMBL-EBI) give their reasons for creating the EMBL-EBI channel:

“The flexibility of this channel allows us to share documents that may not fit neatly into the classic publishing model with more visibility and coherence: as a single collection, rather than scattered amongst various websites. We hope that this will provide an opportunity for increased transparency on the services and projects in which we participate, and make it possible to cite and refer to many kinds of useful information.”

ELIXIR, a major initiative to develop the infrastructure needed to coordinate and sustain Europe’s bioinformatics resources, launched their two-channel Gateway in the run up to Christmas. ELIXIR research and strategy will publish articles relating to ELIXIR’s work on developing tools, data, compute, interoperability and training, as well as strategy documents, reviews and outputs from the €19m HORIZON 2020 ELIXR-EXCELERATE research program. ELIXIR posters and slides is exactly what the name implies: a platform for the academic posters, presentations and other materials relating to ELIXIR’s many projects.

ELIXIR Director Nilkas Blomberg explains the motivations for launching their own Gateway:

“Rapid, transparent communication of our efforts to the wider research community is critical to ELIXIR success and so we are delighted to announce this new partnership. The immediate publication and open peer review provided by F1000Research are ideal tools to ensure community engagement and stimulate discussion. They will prove a critical resource in achieving our outreach goals.”

For further details about the ELIXIR Gateway read the Editorial by Dr. Blomberg and Professors Arlindo Oliveira, Barend Mons, Bengt Persson and Inge Jonassen.

You can follow these and other F1000Research channels by clicking the ‘Track’ button (located on the left of each channel page), which will let you know when new articles, referee reports, posters and slides have been published in the channel.
