Software Article & Channel Updates

We have a flurry of announcements of interest to all scientists who create or use academic software as part of their research activities (so basically everyone):

  • We recently strengthened our stance on software availability to better align with our Open Science principles. Now, the source code underlying any newly presented software must be made publically available and assigned an open license. We strongly encourage the use of an OSS approved licence, but will accept other open licenses including Creative Commons. Software papers describing non-open software, code and/or web tools will be rejected.
  • We have switched the layout of our Software Tool Articles to a single column format, to better accommodate in-text code chunks and so avoid inadvertent line breaks disrupting the code. The first two articles showcasing the new layout are also the first papers in the recently launched Bioconductor
  • We have created the RPackage channel to bring together all the articles detailing new R packages that have been, and will be, published on F1000Research.

Software applications are often of great value to the research community and publishing a Software Tool Article is an excellent way of giving due credit to the scientists who worked hard to create them. The F1000Research platform, with its article versioning system, support for LaTeX submissions and proper syntax highlighting, is particularly well-suited to publishing software articles.
