The Sherpa population of Nepal is much better at dealing with the low oxygen conditions high in the Himalayas than other people are. This study protocol describes the design of a cohort study to further investigate the biological difference between the Sherpas and lowlanders in adapting to the change in oxygen levels when climbing Mount Everest.
