The Vilcek Prize for biomedical science recognizes major contributions to science made by immigrants to America. We are pleased to be able to say that Cell Biology Section Head Peter Walter has received the 2015 prize!
Prof. Walter is a professor of biochemistry and biophysics at the University of California San Francisco and has been an F1000 Section Head since its birth in 2001. He is honoured for two main achievements, the discovery of the signal recognition particle in cells and his ground-breaking work on the unfolded protein response, a cellular quality-control system found in organisms ranging from yeast to humans which may play a role in neurodegenerative diseases, cancer and diabetes. Last year, Prof. Walter also won the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine, and a Lasker Basic Medical Science Award.
Many congrats from F1000, Peter!
