This new article could redefine how we think about the ‘Figure’ in scientific publishing. In a move away from the traditional static image, which can become outdated, Figures 3 is actually a dynamic bundle of code and data that generates images and can be updated through reader interaction or the addition of new data, respectively. The article itself describes the disquieting finding that not all Drosophila melanogaster control strains are equal, suggesting that results obtained from separate labs may not always be comparable or reproducible. Colomb and Brembs found significant differences in the locomotor behavior of Drosophila Canton-S flies (the standard control strain) sourced from five different labs, proposing that founder effects may have influenced the gene pool of the sub-strains.
