What was new in open science this week?
- A few days ago Neil Hall published this paper on Genome Biology calling for a new index to measure social media impact of scientists. What he didn’t expect was that his comment would spawn #AlternateScienceMetrics. Have a look at fellow F1000 Specialist Graham Steel’s excellent Storify.
- We recently published this paper by Brembs and colleagues which has enormous implications for what constitutes a figure, allowing you to submit just data and the associated code to analyze that data, rather than having to worry about creating specific figures. Jure Triglav just created a similar set of figures that analyses weather patterns using live tweets.
- Over at the BioMed Central blog Eve Gray debates the value of the impact factor, particularly in developing countries, and how certain countries have learned to balance the prestige and relevance of research.
- Know somebody who is going above and beyond to change the culture of sharing science openly? Nominate them as a Champion of Change!
Upcoming events:
- Don’t miss Open Science, Open Issues, happening August 18-22, 2014 at The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
- The Royal Society of New Zealand invites you to the XXXIII SCAR Biennial Meetings and Open Science Conference.
