Abnormal hemostatic function one year after orthotopic liver transplantation can be fully attributed to endothelial cell activation

Patients with cirrhosis or other chronic liver diseases have a fragile hemostatic system that can result in renal failure, trauma, infections and bleeding complications. Often many of these patients undergo liver transplantation, but unfortunately the risk of arterial thrombotic events after transplant is still very high.
In this paper, Ton Lisman and colleagues investigated the status of the hemostatic system a long time after successful transplants and found that liver transplant recipients display an unbalanced hemostasis that is related to endothelial activation. This finding could help design preventive measures to avoid vascular complications after liver transplantation.
