Earlier this week, Wiley announced that they have partnered with Altmetric to provide article-level metrics across all 1500+ Wiley journals. Now, any article published in a Wiley journal will have an Altmetric score (online) in order to help the reader paint a fuller picture of the impact of individual papers.
An Altmetric score is a weighted count of the different sources that mention the paper, including tweets, blog posts, comments, newspaper articles — and F1000Prime reviews. F1000Prime data are a distinct measure in Altmetric (see screenshot), and the appearance of altmetric data in Wiley journals will not only provide more information to its readers and authors of the impact of an individual paper, but also its recognition by F1000Prime Faculty Members.
Wiley conducted a survey of article-level metrics after a six-month trial run of Altmetric. They found that 77% of respondents felt they enhanced the value of a journal article, and 87% felt article metrics help them gauge the popularity of a journal article. It’s an exciting time: article-level metrics are helping researchers to decide whether any given piece of research has impact. They won’t replace traditional metrics such as the impact factor anytime soon, but they are an important value that reflects the growing importance of social media discussion and the digital age.
