Professor Sir Michael Marmot, our Head of Faculty in Public Health, will be interviewed by Kirsty Young on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs this Sunday.
Sir Michael is Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London and has spent his career investigating the key factors in leading a long and healthy life, and how your income, postcode and migratory patterns can affect longevity. He was knighted by Her Majesty the Queen in 2000 for services to epidemiology and understanding health inequalities.
In honour of Sir Michael’s appearance on Desert Island Discs, we thought we would ask what your desert island choices would be. For those unfamiliar with the show, Desert Island Discs is a long-running BBC radio programme first broadcast in 1942, on which distinguished guests, i.e. ‘castaways’, can choose 8 pieces of music, one book and one luxury item to take with them. The luxury item must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside, but guests are automatically given all of Shakespeare’s works and either the Bible or another religious or philosophical work.
For a chance to win an F1000 bag of swag, let us know your desert island choices below in the comments! The winning entry will be drawn at random at the end of Monday.
*Update, Monday 7th July*
On yesterday’s show, Sir Michael Marmot chose the following to take to his desert island:
1. Un bel di, Madame Butterfly – Puccini
2. Third movement, Sibelius’s violin concerto
3. Matchmaker – Fiddler on the roof
4. Raga mishra ghara – Ravi Shankar
5. Oh, Hang at open doors – Peter Grimes, Benjamin Britten
6. Deh vieni non tardar – The marriage of Figaro by Mozart
7. Bach cello suites no. 2, Allemande
8. Kudanshe – Afriquoi

November Rain by Guns n’ Roses, Shine on you Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd, Mosquito Song by Queens of the Stone Age, Leper Messiah by Metallica, Cadillac by T. Rex, Space Oddity by David Bowie, 22 Acacia Ave. by Iron Maiden and N.I.B. by Black Sabbath. Each one of them is a longer song, so they should last me a while…plus they’re awesome! For my book, I choose ‘Men at Arms’ by Terry Pratchett. I think it’s the best Discworld book and it has Drama, Comedy and Tragedy. Finally, a guitar would be my luxury item. Once I’m finally sick of the music, I’ll write my own. Or if need be, it’s firewood!
My top 10 in no particular order (and not very modern I’m afraid):
Isn’t it a Pity – George Harrison
Love in Vain (live) – Rolling Stones
Long Cool Woman – The Hollies
The End of the Line – Travelling Wilburys
Labelled with Love – Squeeze
Paradise – Dwight Yoakam
Everybody’s Talking – Harry Nilsson
Walking in Memphis – Marc Cohn
Cortez the Killer – Neil Young
Green River – CCR
Book – GRRM A Song of Ice and Fire (preferably vols 6 & 7 omnibus edition!)
Luxury Item – A comfortable leather armchair.
is Afriquoi avilable to buy? if so, please could you let me know?
