yanaYeast Augmented Network Analysis (YANA): a new systems approach to identify therapeutic targets for human genetic diseases  [v1; ref status: indexed, https://f1000r.es/3gk]

David J. Wiley, Ilona Juan, Hao Le et al

In this paper, Gennaro D’Urso and colleagues introduce the Yeast Augmented Network Analysis (YANA), a novel genetic approach to identify new compounds for the treatment of rare human diseases. YANA is a fission yeast genetic assay that can leverage protein-protein interaction data to characterize human disease networks. As an example, the authors chose the gene responsible for X-linked spinal muscular atrophy to examine the conserved genetic interactions between the fission yeast gene and the human query gene. The combination of both experimental data and bioinformatics data allowed the characterization of genetic networks, which revealed potential therapeutic targets for spinal muscular atrophy. The authors suggest that this approach will speed up the identification of new targets for the treatment of thousands of human diseases.
