This week’s news from the open science world:
- Editing company Cofactor launched in London on June 11 with an event about changes in peer review. Several panelists spoke about open peer review, including F1000Research author Giulia De Rossi. Storify with tweets from the event is here, and a photo (by Kaveh Bazargan) is below.
- The Open Repositories meeting in Helsinki just ended. Tweets from the conference are tagged #OR2014
- Lenny Teytelman has made a list of the influencers of open access and open science.
- Notes from the June 12 Mozilla Science Lab Call are available online. These calls are open to anyone, and cover news from Mozilla Science Lab as well as others working on science on the web.
- Finally some interesting news from… the “open car industry”! Tesla Motors is opening up their patents, to encourage others to produce electric vehicles. Founder Elon Musk says “If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal.” There are parallels here with biomedical research, where small groups are afraid to share unpublished data out of fear a larger group or company will scoop them. The same fear Tesla had, but they saw that hiding their resources was delaying the field.
