On 30th January, F1000 attended University of Bath’s Biology and Biochemistry Research Day. This annual event gives researchers in this department a chance to showcase their latest research to their peers. In total, 45 posters were displayed, categorised into first-, second- and third-year PhD students and post-doctoral researchers. Between poster exhibitions, five presentations were given from the department’s faculty, including a plenary lecture from Faculty Member Professor Edward Feil entitled ‘Where did all the MRSA come from (a fishy tale)’.
This was the first time I had attended a Research Day without either a poster under my arm or a slide deck ready to upload. I had the opportunity to look through a number of posters and talk with the exhibitors about their research projects. All posters were judged by the department’s faculty and the prestigious poster prize winners were announced during the closing remarks.
F1000 sponsored the Research Fellow category poster prize, which was awarded to Yasuhiko Irie – congratulations Yasuhiko! Yasuhiko is currently on a Marie Curie Fellowship at University of Bath, researching extracellular polysaccharides. He was awarded the prize for his poster entitled ‘Biofilm extracellular polysaccharides of Pseudomonas aeruginosa have dual roles as public and private goods’. He received a one-year subscription to F1000Prime, a waiver of the article-processing charges for publishing in F1000Research, some F1000 merchandise and a £50 Amazon Voucher. Yasuhiko was a user of F1000 during his time at University of Washington and was pleased to be able to re-connect with us.
