We’re very pleased to be able to congratulate three Members of F1000Prime that have been included by the Science Council in their list of the 100 leading UK practising scientists.
The Science Council is a UK-based organisation whose aims are to “advance science and the application of science for society by bringing together a broad spectrum of professional bodies and learned societies…” The published list is part of this goal, attempting to challenge the “narrow and old fashioned” view on scientists that dominates the media.
In the words of Chief executive Diana Garnham:
“Science is like an orchestra. It takes many instruments working together to produce a fine performance. At the moment, almost exclusively, it is the virtuosity of the soloists being addressed and praised. Of course, they are essential to science and should be valued accordingly. However, we must, at the same time, recognise and encourage the many other types of contributory scientific talent and experience.”
The following members of F1000Prime are among those selected:
Dame Kay Davies
Director of the Medical Research Council Functional Genomics Unit, University of Oxford and Member of F1000Prime’s prestigious International Advisory Board.
Dame Janet Thornton
Director of the European Bioinformatics Institute and Section Head for Bioinformatics in the Genomics & Genetics Faculty at F1000Prime, as well as a member of the Advisory Panel start-up group for F1000Research.
Jonathan Jones
Project Lead at the Sainsbury Laboratory and Section Head for Plant-Biotic Interactions in the Plant Biology Faculty at F1000Prime.
For the full list, and the categories for which they were chosen, please see the Science Council announcement. Congratulations again to all!
