As you may remember, F1000 has a programme called F1000 Specialists, which allows users of any of the F1000 products, including F1000Research and F1000Posters, to help inform others in their community about us. We launched this last summer, and now have more than 150 F1000 Specialists on six continents.
To apply to become an F1000 Specialist at your institute, simply fill in the form on the application page. Approved F1000 Specialists received a welcome pack with a T-shirt and other goodies, as well as access to F1000Prime. The biggest perk is a full article processing charge waiver for F1000Research, and to get this you will need to give a talk to your colleagues. Everyone in the audience of your talk will get a discount towards publishing in F1000Research and a trial period of F1000Prime access.
Being an F1000 Specialist is a good opportunity for those of you interested in getting to know F1000 a bit better, and it makes a nice addition to your CV. Some F1000 Specialists have helped out with local F1000 events, others beta-tested new features, and some came up with their own outreach activities. At the moment, a few F1000 Specialists in the US are helping F1000Research Outreach Directors arrange speaking engagements at their universities, and we always look forward to these opportunities to meet local researchers on our travels.
Last week, the F1000 Specialist of the Year 2013 was announced on the F1000Prime blog, Naturally Selected. An excerpt from Antonia’s post, with the winner in his F1000 Specialists T-shirt:
After a tremendously eventful year for the F1000 Specialists program, and as we look forward to another equally eventful one, we’re pleased to highlight the achievements of four outstanding F1000 Specialists, one of which we crown F1000 Specialist of the Year 2013.

Congratulations to Jerome Korzelius (DKFZ, Germany) for presenting an F1000 Specialist talk, organising the F1000 Heidelberg meet-up and writing two blogs on his recent conference trips for Naturally Selected. I spoke to Jerome, who said, “I am very pleased to be awarded this prize; I have really enjoyed the experience I gained by being an F1000 Specialist. It has given me plenty of insight into what F1000 is doing to change science publishing and communication, and I hope to continue representing F1000 at the DKFZ in the future.”
