*Drum roll*… John Gurdon, a Faculty Member in our Developmental Biology Faculty.
Sir John was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with another former Faculty Member, Shinya Yamanaka, for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent.
Sir John revealed that a school report sits above his desk at the Gurdon Institute in Cambridge (named in his honour) advising him not to pursue a career in science. An excerpt from the report reads,
I believe that he has ideas about becoming a Scientist; on his present showing this is quite ridiculous … it would be a sheer waste of time, both on his part and of those who have to teach him.
He joins the growing list of F1000 Nobel laureates, of whom include Jules Hoffman and Roger Tsien.
Many congrats, John!
