We have now finalised our Article Processing Charges (APCs) for F1000 Research which will come into effect on 1 Jan 2013 (submission is free of charge until this date). We have split our article types into 2 main groups:
- Short articles: single-result articles / data articles / case reports / articles based on posters / correspondence / commentaries – US $500
- All other articles: includes research articles / methods articles / protocols / opinions / reviews – US $1000
These fees include up to 1 GB of data. For 1-5 GB of data with an article, we will need to charge an additional US $200 to cover the storage costs involved. Beyond 5 GB of data, we ask you to contact us to discuss the costs.
We have varying discounts, most notably for our referees who will receive a 50% discount on anything submitted within the ensuing 12 months. Registered users on our core F1000 Recommendation service (i.e. those with personal subscriptions or based at subscribing institutes) will receive a 15% discount.
As with other major Open Access journals, charges are payable once the article has been accepted for publishing (i.e. following successful completion of our pre-publication checks). We will also consider individual waiver requests on a case-by-case basis in situations where there is a lack of funds. Additionally, we will be adhering to HINARI/AGORA where authors from more than 90 low-income countries will receive automatic waivers on APCs.
With these fees, we have aimed for a very simple structure that makes it easy to understand and pay, whilst keeping costs low for researchers. We also want to encourage the publication of those smaller pieces of research and data that are typically too time-consuming and expensive to try and publish currently through traditional routes.
