This probably wouldn’t work all that well as a lab timer, but it is a gorgeous piece of art:
Every second runs round the dial
This is a true mechanical clock. There’s a good description of the chronophage—visuals showing the levers of the escapement, and the vernier slit and lens system that actually displays the system. The clock was designed by John Turner for the outside of Corpus Christi College’s new library building. There’s more about the clock, how it was made and the reaction of the public, at YouTube.

That is indeed an artifact of true ingenuity & beauty.
This article is a little late, the unveiling was in September 2008. Never the less, it is a marvelous piece of mechanical design. It would be neat to be able to buy a smaller version of it.
It’s basic , functional and works , what more could you want ?
