G spot

It’s not all fun and games in science, you know. There’s serious stuff too. Like this report from Professor Saeed Thabet in Cairo, “Reality of the G-spot and its relation to female circumcision and vaginal surgery”1:
The G-spot is functional reality in 82.3% of women, an anatomical reality in 54.3% and a histological reality in 47.4%. Anterior vaginal wall surgery usually affects the G-spot and female sexuality, but female circumcision rarely affects them.
You can read the evaluation by Roy Levin for free. I find it quite remarkable that there is so much we don’t know about human anatomy, and that our methods of looking are still so crude. And I find it slightly boggling that it was ever considered acceptable to try to repair a cystourethrocele without taking care to “preserve structure and function” of any surrounding female anatomy. If more obs/gyn surgeons were women, I wonder what medicine would look like?
More happily, coming up this week we have an evaluation that will contain the line (yes, I sometimes get to see submissions before they’re published), “viewing pictures of the loved partner reduced significantly self-reported pain ratings, and confirmed the activation of reward systems”. Awww. You’ll enjoy the rest of the evaluation too—keep an eye out for it.
