Light of my life

Robie Macdonald of the Canadian Institute of Ocean Sciences points out that when it comes to ocean pollution, most of us have been blind to night-time contamination by light.

NASA's nighttime map

The (very short) paper touches on the potential and real effects of light pollution on wildlife, and points out that a comparable (chemical) pollutant would not be tolerated1. The authors suggest that addressing the problem would bring two-fold benefits to the environment: not only would decreasing light output decrease its directly damaging effects, but would also do wonders for energy conservation.

The NASA image of the lights is intriguing. It must be a composite picture, because it cannot be night at any one instant for the entire earth.
