New MRC head

Last week, the Medical Research Council announced it was appointing John Savill as its new chief executive.

Savill seems to have the right experience — he is now head of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, and the country’s chief scientific advisory for health.

But it’s a tough gig — the public agency is expected to have to make serious spending cuts this Fall, according to Nature News, after spending more than

  1. I would respectfully suggest that Dr Savill follow up on what his predecessors neglected to do – and that is to conduct a systematic review into the efficacy of non-human primate research and compare historical findings of animal experiments with clinical outcomes in human subjects.
