I’ve been trying to dig up stats on the numbers of scientists out there. Here’s what I’ve found, and if anyone finds anything better, please let me know:
NSF: 5.5 million scientists in the US (some 16 million working in “related occupations”)
http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/seind10/c3/c3h.htm
UNESCO: around 6 million non-US scientists (2007)
http://stats.uis.unesco.org/unesco/tableviewer/document.aspx?ReportId=143
OECD: around 4.7 million non-US scientists (2008)
http://www.oecd.org/document/26/0,3343,en_2649_33703_1901082_1_1_1_1,00.html
AFL-CIO: 7.45 million US scientists (2009)

Ah, fantastic, David: thanks. It’s a start, anyway.
